Derry exodus expected as players earn free agent status
November 27, 2009
All Derry City players have been afforded free agent status by the Football Association of Ireland.
Manager Stephen Kenny will attempt to keep some of his squad at the Brandywell as he bids to steer the club out of the First Division at the first time of asking next season.
But the majority of his 2009 squad will be expected to move on having been given the status of free agents by the FAI this week.
Despite Derry’s ejection from the League following player contract irregularities, and the fact that the players had gone almost three months without pay, there had been confusion over the status of the Candystripes players.
That uncertainty initially scuppered the proposed move of Northern Ireland under-21 star James McClean to English side Lincoln City, although McClean later opted out of that transfer in any case.
As for the rest of the Derry players, defenders Steven Gray and Clive Delaney are expected to join clubs in Dublin, Ruaidhri Higgins has been linked with Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen and Sligo Rovers have been mentioned in connection with a move for winger Gareth McGlynn.
