McClean opts out of Lincoln switch
November 27, 2009
Derry City and Northern Ireland under-21 winger James McClean has backed out of a proposed move to English League Two side Lincoln City.
Imps manager Chris Sutton had been interested in the 20-year-old but initial attempts to complete the deal ran into problems because of uncertainties over Derry’s existing contracts following the club’s ejection from the League of Ireland.
McClean subsequently travelled to Sincil Bank for a trial but despite impressing Sutton during his brief stay, he has since returned to his homeland.
Sutton said: “James’s father phoned me and said he was homesick and won’t be leaving Ireland. It’s unfortunate because we’ve been impressed with what we’ve seen of him.
“Historically some of the Irish players who have come over have struggled to settle. He does come from a big family but I thought two days was a little short, I’d have expected him to give it a week.”
