Robinson tops Rovers released list
November 26, 2009
Shane Robinson, a League of Ireland winner with Drogheda United two years ago, is among four players to be released by Shamrock Rovers, while highly-rated goalkeeper Barry Murphy could also be on the way out of Tallaght Stadium.
Robinson joined the Hoops for a second spell at the start of the year after the end of his four-year stint at Drogheda.
Despite starting all but seven of the club’s Premier Division outings, he has not been offered a new contract for 2010 and beyond.
The other players released by Rovers are veteran centre half Darragh Maguire and young defenders Simon Madden and Cory Tracey.
Goalkeeper Barry Murphy also faces an uncertain future with O’Neill having confirmed that the highly-rated 24-year-old, who graduated from the club’s underage ranks, has failed to commit himself to the Hoops project.
Murphy played second fiddle to summer signing from Linfield, Northern Ireland international Alan Mannus, for the final part of the 2009 season, and has been linked with a move to champions Bohemians, where he would replace his Ipswich-bound namesake Brian.
O’Neill said: “Barry has yet to notify us of his intentions for next season despite numerous attempts by the club to determine what he intends to do.
“He was offered an improved, two-year contract in July which is in line with the club’s wage structure for senior players. However, he refused to commit himself to the club. I can only assume he is pursuing other options elsewhere.”
While perhaps five of the Rovers squad are on the way out of Tallaght, one player moving in the opposite direction is James Chambers, who has been snapped up from Drogheda United.
