Derry reveal Kenny stay
November 24, 2009
Derry City steering committee chairman Phil O’Doherty has revealed that manager Stephen Kenny is staying at the Brandywell.
Kenny’s position was uncertain after Derry were ejected from the League of Ireland for player contract irregularities.
Dundalk, on the look-out for a new manager following the departure of Sean Connor, had been keen to hire the former Longford Town, Bohemians and Dunfermline Athletic chief.
But Kenny will instead remain in situ at the Brandywell, where he will be charged with the task of guiding Derry to promotion from the First Division next season.
O’Doherty told the Irish Independent: “I met Stephen myself on Saturday morning for about an hour and all the board members met him on Sunday night. We basically made him an offer and he’s accepted it on a two-year contract.
“Stephen is going to be a manager of a First Division club, which is not what he’s used to, and he knows it’s going to be a challenge getting out of the First Division. It’s a tough league.”
