€337k – the cost of Derry’s “dual contracts”
November 10, 2009
The Football Association of Ireland has revealed that Derry City’s dual contracts with players would have resulted in more than €300,000 in undisclosed salary payments to players this year.
The FAI stripped Derry of its League of Ireland status following a hearing at its Abbotstown headquarters on Saturday.
The Candystripes will not be awarded prize money for finishing in fourth place this season and will not be allowed to take part in the Premier Division next year.
They can apply to participate in the First Division or ‘A’ Championship – but the club is considering legal action to reverse the decision.
However, FAI chief executive John Delaney offered damning evidence of Derry’s second unofficial contracts with players.
He told RTE News: “I’ve been exasperated by the Derry City officials’ actions since the meeting which took place here at Abbotstown the previous Wednesday and by the circus that a celebrity-type solicitor has brought to proceedings.
“This is a very serious issue for Irish football ... If I tot up the 22 players in total, the annual difference [between disclosed contract details and actual payments] would be €337,000. That is the reason that Derry City’s contract with the League of Ireland had to be terminated. [Derry’s actions were] unfair to the clubs who are playing fair, unfair to the Brays and the Droghedas and the Galways, who’ve gone about their business properly.”
