onnor spent just one season in charge at Oriel Park, helping the club consolidate its position in the Premier Division in its first year following promotion.

However, his position at the club had been called into question in recent weeks following strong links with the manager’s position at Scottish League side Greenock Morton.

In addition, disciplinary problems beset Dundalk all year, resulting in 15 red cards for Lilywhites players this season - eight more than any other club in the Premier Division.

In a statement issued by Dundalk FC on Monday morning, Connor said: “I would like to have been able to build on the foundation stones that were laid here but believe that it’s in the best interest of both parties to part on an amicable basis.

“Dundalk is a club with a fervent support base and has enormous potential. As with my previous clubs, I am content that I leave the club in a stronger position then when I joined. I want to thank all the players, the staff and the supporters for their commitment and tenacity over the course of the season, as I look forward to my next challenge with continued enthusiasm and confidence.”

Club chairman Gerry Matthews added: “The football club are eager to acknowledge the achievement of the fifth place league finish, and to commend the manager for the significant part he has played in securing the stated goal of consolidation in the Premier Division. We wish Sean every success in his future career in football.”

Stephen Kenny, the manager of a Derry City side which has been thrown out of the league over breaches of player contract regulations, Galway United boss Ian Foster and Drogheda United chief Alan Mathews have all been linked with the Oriel Park hotseat.
