Doyle calls on fans to support local clubs
October 30, 2009
Wolves and Ireland star Kevin Doyle has urged supporters to support their local sides in a bid to lift the League of Ireland out of financial peril.
Doyle and his Premier League teammates take on his hometown club Wexford Youths on Monday night next (November 2nd).
The Ferrycarrig Park clash is likely to attract a decent turn-out but Doyle, who represented Wexford as a schoolboy before rising to prominence at St Patrick’s Athletic, Cork City and Reading, has urged fans to maintain their support for the long-term.
He told the Irish Daily Mirror: “The League is not in a good position at the moment, which is sad to see as my time there played a huge role in my progress.
“If a game like this can help to build the profile of the Wexford Youths and raise some money for the club then that’s good.
“But it would be great if people supported their local club week in, week out. Hopefully a lot of people at Ferrycarrig Park on Monday will be at the club’s next league game.”
Wexford Youths travel north to take on Monaghan United tonight (Friday) before wrapping up their League of Ireland campaign at home to Mervue United next week.
