Fahey is good enough for under-21 squad – McDonnell
March 29, 2005
St Patrick’s Athletic manager John McDonnell has paid tribute to the performance of midfielder Keith Fahey in last Friday night’s Premier Division clash with Bohemians, but insisted he should have been in Israel with the Irish under-21 squad instead.
Fahey was a member of Gerry Smith’s Irish under-20 squad at the World Youth Championship finals in 2003.
And while several of that squad, including Stephen Elliott, Willo Flood, Paddy McCarthy, Glenn Whelan and Darren Potter, have gone on to greater things with the under-21s and beyond, Fahey has been completely overlooked by under-21 coach Don Givens over the past 12 months.
But McDonnell firmly believes that his side’s key player is good enough to join Cork City duo Liam Kearney and Kevin Doyle, Longford Town’s Stephen Paisley and Waterford United’s Daryl Murphy as home-based players in the representative squad.
He said: “Keith Fahey showed what he was capable of against Bohemians. He came up against Kevin Hunt, one of the best midfielders in the league, and looked after him.
“Maybe he shouldn’t have been playing at all – he should have been in Israel with the Irish under-21s, because he’s good enough to be in the squad at least.”
